What is the “new features” of Taiwan’s fine arts? Are the artworks of young artists considered to be the new features of fines arts? What is the meaning of development of Taiwan’s fine arts as found in the “Exhibition of the Newly Emerging Artists in Taiwan” sponsored by Taichung County Seaport Art Center? Questions of the kind are, during the process of preparation in the exhibition of new features, sincerely reviewed and reflected upon because a contest and exhibition of artworks focus on “new features” cannot and should not still be following the stereotype.

It is a matter of course that with the existence of “Exhibition of the Newly Emerging Artists in Taiwan” it has helped stimulate the establishment of artistic design department and graduate school among college and university around the country one after the other, booming development of cultural creative industry, prosperity of fine arts market, and the injection of young and artistic talents into relevant areas, phenomena of sure inevitability. And with the growth of the new generation creative youngsters and their ever increasing desire to share as well as to receive recognition and attention the new features exhibition has then played such a role of exchange station, gangway, and arena. Thus, the spirit of the new features exhibition should display, under such diversified time of era of artistic creative format and style, itself with open attitude to welcome works created with fresh vision. As a result, those artworks for these many years about self-refection, echo of the society, emotional projection, philosophical discussion, experiment of the media and others have, as a whole, received much celebration and feedbacks; however, when one is pursuing artworks after avant garde and novel ideas and giving up stereotype while engrossing the classics, the rumination after novel knowledge can help render the unique feelings, thoughts, and expression demonstrated to look more profound as recorded and demonstrated with youthful and creative life. The new features exhibition has not only conglomerated the creative power of youthful artistic workers to reflect the spectrum of what is here and now from each of the perspectives, but also generated such ever increasing approachability and amiability of the artworks from the interaction with other creative workers and general public. With such interaction, the interface between artistic creation and daily life is thus drawing nearer, and the ideas of general public are, therefore, being stimulated, creativity untapped, and artistic possibility and acceptance greatly enhanced, which are considered to be of the diversified values holding the new features exhibition.

”Exhibition of the Newly Emerging Artists in Taiwan-3D Creation Series” held this year is, of the 18 selected artists who have made use of various kinds of media material to demonstrate each kind of issue, their delicate elaboration has provoked much surprise and amazement and bold vision attracted much praise, the 3-D artworks have stirred much issues and contemplation with unlimited horizon as either in concrete or abstract it is of the “heart features” of the young artists. Through the hands and eyes of these, we have observed the preciousness of “difference.” Nonetheless, the new artistic features has thus prospered and bloomed as we sense such passion and sincerity from their “similarity.” It is believed when we reflect upon the process of the development of fine arts in Taiwan in future the features and style demonstrated by these young talents during the “Exhibition of the Newly Emerging Artists in Taiwan” every here and now should be founded as important time-frames for the well-accumulated Taiwan’s history of fine arts.

Taichung County Stone Carvers Association was founded on December 31^st, 2005. Its origin began even earlier in 1997 May 10^th, when Master Chen Song arranged for the “Tatushan stone caring studies camp” in his home in Shalu township. The studies camp invited anyone interested in stone carving to experience and start their own creation. Not only does Master Chen provide an open and quiet working environment, he provide free tools as well. It is now the 13^th year since the first camp and has trained many members, the works produces are also diverse and excellent.

Master Chen Song has always preferred using western Taiwan’s stone material, such as the Tatushan mountain, Jhuoshuei creek, Daja creek and Da-an creek. These ready- to-use materials can be used without damaging the environment. Making it a much more worthwhile pursuit combining living and art to create art.

This year the member’s exhibit is a popular event, with Master Chen Song, the first president of the association passionate about the event. He believes the Taiwan east coast stone carving are full of important master carvers and with his enthusiasm and charisma. He has invited master stone carvers from east, north and south in this island to participate in this exhibition.

Established in 1959, the Association of Taiwan Artist Today (ATAT) is one of the few art groups in Taiwan that has a long history. It is once interrupted by a pause, due to the alternation of time and the members’ different plans for life, and yet the zeal for art persisted and intensified over years, and finally brought about its revival in 2002, and legal registration as a national art association for Taiwan citizens, under the title of Association of Taiwan Artist Today, in 2006. In a few years, it attracts 30 passionate artists of distinction who devote energy and ardor to realizing their dreams together.

ATAT consists of the established, mid-career, and emerging artists who live in the north, central and south Taiwan. Impelled by the urge to instruct and receive, its members are characterized by bold and diverse expressions among Taiwan artists. Liao Shiou-ping, appraised as “Father of Printmaking”, and Chung You-hui, Lin Hsueh-ching, Tsai I-shung, and Huang Shyh-twan, whose work extends to the field of printmaking, are the active pilots of printmaking in Taiwan. Their years of dedicating efforts are shown in the preliminary training of school education which is acquiring international exchange. Zao Bi, aside from being a painter and connoisseur of ceramic printing, is an accomplished educator, as Chang Ching-shu is, in the field of children education. Hung Yu-ta is one of the important figures in the Alliance of Modern Artists in Kaohsiung. Another characteristic of ATAT is that many of the members studied or lived for years in Europe, the United States, or Japan, among which Liao Shiou-ping, Tsai I-shung, Kuo Po-chou, Lin Mei-chih, Ke Shih-chung, and Yu Shou-chung studied in USA, Li Wen-tsien, Lin Wen-chiang, Tao Wen-yueh, Shen Hong-chin, Wu Yen-i, and Hsu Kuo-yu studied in France, Zao Bi studied in Germany, Chou Pei-yung studied in Australia, and Ho Hsuan-kuang, Chung You-hui, and Lin Hseuh-ching studied in Japan. There are also, of course, Chang Ching-shu, Chien Shi-kuei, Lai Wei-yen, Hsu Te-neng, and many others, who root their art in the land to which they were born. To bridge their efforts, ATAT makes regular contacts with its members, and bends on the evolvement of contemporary art in Taiwan and abroad, in hope of fashioning a perspective that both attends to the local and looks out to the international.

Art in the 21st century is one informed by multiple trends, especially by the rapid growth of digital technology. Under the careful guidance of its director Chien Shi-kuei, ATAT dedicates itself to an art practice and thinking that links the past, present, and future of art. Its annual presentation aims to encourage the art of painting, and further broaden its function and prospect in the future.
